Alameda Health System is hiring! The Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer leads and is responsible for the planning and implementation of information systems used in the ambulatory clinical environment consistent with the AHS enterprise strategic plan; provides leadership and vision for clinical systems initiatives across the ambulatory portion of the enterprise; provides leadership for clinical informatics processes and integration of those processes with clinical information technology strategies; provides the clinical perspective to informatics projects or systems that impact patient care or clinical practice either directly or indirectly; responsible for developing and driving successful clinical transformation engagements, particularly through engaging clinical leadership in the implementation of the clinical systems, processes and standards.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification, however, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  • Serves as the primary liaison between IS and Ambulatory clinical communities; chairs or co-chairs the appropriate clinical information system committee(s).
  • Participates in IS strategic planning; reviews medical informatics trends, experiences and approaches; develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems based on medical informatics trends and best practices.
  • Builds relationships with physicians to gain support of IS initiatives; is highly responsive to users’ needs, including training, to encourage widespread acceptance and provider use of the clinical systems.
  • Identifies the clinical data requirements of the Directors, Departments, Committees, clinicians, and patients across AHS; advocates for and coordinate the advancement of clinical information systems to satisfy these information requirements.
  • Educates clinicians and patients across the enterprise about plans for the information systems and relevant Informatics issues (e.g. data integrity and security); demonstrates the benefits of the new systems to clinicians.
  • Leads development of clinical "rules" supporting patient care and protocol research as well as the design of clinical system features supporting protocol management and the use of the system to leverage the clinicians' time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians.
  • Leads and facilitates key clinical leadership groups in the creation of required clinical content, protocols, workflows and related system usage policies.
  • Creates and supervises clinical optimization teams to review and enhance system utilization and configuration to improve the efficiency and outcomes of clinical care.
  • Leads Information Systems Projects with potential impact on clinical practice or patient care; reports on status of clinical informatics projects and systems to governance committees; develops clinical informatics work teams; works with senior clinical leadership and collaborates to build up the clinical informatics team’s knowledge in deploying standardized evidence-based best practices in medicine, clinical content and adoption of best practices.
  • Works in concert with Information Services (IS) and Quality departments to design and implement systems supporting patient care, research activities and quality improvement.
  • Participates in data governance by identifying and addressing critical data quality management issues and monitoring and improving quality data.
  • Acts as an advocate for the protection of patient privacy and the security of protected health information.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Required Education: M.D./D.O. degree or equivalent.

Preferred Education: Master's degree (MBA, MBI) and/or certification in related fields.

Required Experience: Three years clinical background as practicing clinician or clinical leader.

Preferred Experience: Three years healthcare management experience; experience with workflow redesign and process improvement associated with clinical system implementation; Epic certification as a builder or informaticist; experience in process improvement, data analysis and the use of information systems to develop and support outcome measurement and management.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid license to practice medicine in the state of California.

Preferred Licenses/Certifications: Board certification, or eligibility for board certification, in Clinical Informatics
